In 2014, Akon launched a solar initiative to bring electricity to rural Africa

Founded in February 2014 by Akon, Thione Niang, and Samba Bathily, Akon Lighting Africa works to bring solar-generated electricity to underserved communities across the continent. The initiative expanded into 14 countries during its first year of operation. Centered on off-grid solar technology, the project utilizes public-private partnerships to establish sustainable electricity access, with plans for continued growth throughout Africa.
