Ranabaali Trailer Review: Vijay Deverakonda’s Aggression Meets Rashmika Mandanna’s Charm In This Upcoming Alternate History Drama

Actors Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda are pairing up on screen after a long gap. While they were not seen together on screen, they kept the audience guessing about their on-screen relationship. This was until they made the relationship official and legal with their wedding pictures this year. In the year, they are returning to the big screen as a couple in Ranabaali. What’s even more interesting is that it is a period drama.

Director Rahul Sankrityan describes his film as an alternate-history film, which means it takes a part of history and reimagines how it could have played out. The upcoming film is set against the backdrop of the 19th-century famine in southern India under British rule. Vijay plays a fictional character who is also the savior of his people.

The trailer opens with the birth of a miracle baby amid dramatic circumstances. We hear a background voice claiming that this baby will help the local people free themselves from British rule. The little baby grows to be Ranabaali (Vijay Deverakonda). He married Jayamma (Rashmika Mandanna) in an arranged marriage. The tone of the trailer becomes quite light-hearted when he gets glimpses of their playful marriage.

But things get intense when a famine hits the region, and the British only profit from it. Many locals take their lives, while many others die of starvation. During this phase, Ranabaali rises to the occasion and almost becomes a one-man army to take down the British.

Ranabaali could be the comeback Vijay Deverakonda has been waiting for. He is an aggressive personified in the trailer as the titular character. Rashmika Mandanna is charming as Jayamma and seems to be the soul of the film. This marks the couple’s on-screen reunion after Dear Comrade (2017). Previously, the couple has shone on screen with their chemistry. However, Ranabaali places them in a different era and set of circumstances, unlike their previous screen collaborations.

However, in many parts, Rahul Sankrityan’s film feels overly dramatized. This was recently observed in Nani’s The Paradise, which was loud and lacked soul. The trailer of Ranabaali also shows Indians getting brutally murdered by the British. However, it feels like a forced way to evoke emotion in audiences. When violence is used for shock value, it loses impact and fails to elicit the desired emotion in the audience. In recent years, several films have used violence in a similar manner, to the extent that it now has the potential to desensitize the audience.

However, the extent of Ranabaali’s impact will be known upon its October 16 release. The film will be released in theaters on the same weekend as Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2.
