“Nana Patekar Ko Jo Price Di Thi, Anil Kapoor Bhi Nahi Leta Tha” – What Happened On The Sets Of This Madhuri Dixit Film Leading To Nana’s Exit!

Bollywood is a place where projects keep getting stalled, actors keep getting replaced, and stories keep getting made! One such story is about Nana Patekar’s ouster from the 1995 film Raja starring Sanjay Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit! The film initially had Nana Patekar playing one of the supporting characters, and director Indra Kumar was very keen on working with him. But after 2 days, something led to differences in their creative vision, and what followed next was an unmatched professionalism shown by both parties.

The Classic Vision VS Territorry Clash

The classic clash between an actor’s passionate over-involvement and a director’s vision temporarily derailed the shoot and confused the main lead, Madhuri Dixit, intimidated a co-actor, Dalip Tahil, leading to Indra Kumar setting boundaries for Nana Patekar. In a conversation with Mukesh Khanna, the director recalled what actually happened on the sets of Raja.

The 1995 cult classic was directed by Indra Kumar and is best remembered for its chartbuster music and the explosive chemistry between Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Kapoor. However, few know that the pivotal role of Sanjay Kapoor’s elder brother, eventually made iconic by Paresh Rawal, was originally bagged by Nana Patekar.

Nana had signed the film on a whopping paycheck, even higher than what top-tier stars like Anil Kapoor commanded at the time. However, just two days into shooting, trouble began brewing on set. Known for his intense involvement, Nana started giving directorial inputs and acting notes directly to co-stars, including Madhuri Dixit, Dalip Tahil, and Mukesh Khanna. While Indra Kumar initially acknowledged that Nana’s ideas were good, he soon realized that the actor was stepping beyond the boundaries of a performer and crossing into the director’s territory.

In an interview with Mukesh Khanna for his YouTube Channel, the Mastii director recalled, “Jab actor director ka kaam karne lag jaata hai toh director ko samajh jaana chahiye woh ultimately buri film banayega ya actors ka bura performance aayega. In all fairness, Nana chah raha tha sab achcha kaam karein. Unka intention bura nahin tha, tareeka bura tha. Aap woh Lakshman Rekha nahin cross kar sakte.”

Recognizing that this creative friction was causing confusion on set, especially for Madhuri, who relied heavily on Indra Kumar’s direction, the filmmaker decided it was time to step in before the project was compromised. He narrated, “Main unke ghar gaya, unko achche se samjhaya. Unhonein bhi samjha ki haan, ‘Indu, yeh mera way of working hai, yeh tumhara way of working nahin hai. So, let’s part ways.”

Nana Patekar Returned His Entire Paycheck

What shocked Indra Kumar next was Nana’s integrity regarding his fee. Despite having shot for two days and signing on a record fee, he promptly returned the entire amount to the producers. As Indra Kumar reflected in his conversation, “Nana Patekar itne shareef insaan hain, doosra koi actor hota to paise waapas nahi deta. Unhone, jo paise liye the mere se, aur bahut bade paise liye the. Maine jo unko price di thi na, us zamane mein Anil Kapoor bhi nahi leta tha. Unhone mujhse wo price maanga tha, mujhe unke saath kaam karna tha, maine bola done! Aur wo paise usne mujhe waapas kiya, poore.”

While fans missed out on seeing Nana Patekar share the screen with Madhuri Dixit in Raja, the story behind his departure remains a respectful and professional exit story in Bollywood history.
