Jailer 2, starring Rajinikanth in the lead role, is the most-awaited Tamil release of the year. Backed by the sequel factor, expectations are sky-high for the film, and, going by the advance booking response, it is poised for a big start. Amid this, everyone is eagerly waiting to see whether it emerges as the highest-grossing South Indian film of 2026 at the worldwide box office. So far, several biggies have failed, so everyone has put their bet on Rajini’s upcoming biggie.
Which film holds the record as the highest-grossing South Indian film of 2026?
For those who don’t know, Ram Charan’s Peddi is currently the highest-grossing South Indian film of the year. Although it underperformed, the film grossed 341.15 crore at the worldwide box office. After Peddi, some potential blockbusters were released, but none surpassed it.
Jana Nayagan, being Thalapathy Vijay’s last film, was expected to challenge Peddi’s lifetime collection but wrapped up at 327.2 crore gross. Toxic had a shot at it but fell just short of the target, ending at 333.49 crore gross. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit created chances to beat Ram Charan’s film but ended up scoring 333.09 crore gross.

How much does Jailer 2 need to become the top South Indian grosser of 2026?
As mentioned above, Peddi scored 341.15 crore globally. So, to become the highest-grossing South Indian film of the year, Jailer 2 must gross over 341.15 crore. The opening itself is expected to rake in 120 crore+ for Rajinikanth’s biggie, so chances of defeating Peddi are high. However, positive word-of-mouth is very important, as we have seen movies tumbling down after a strong start.
As a sequel and the reunion of Rajinikanth and Nelson, Jailer 2 is projected to gross over 500-600 crore worldwide. So, even with decent content, the film could dethrone Peddi and become the highest-grossing South Indian film of the year worldwide.
