One of the most awaited movie sequels by James Cameron, Avatar 2 got postponed again. The fans have to wait a little longer now. The movie was originally planned to be released on 18th December 2020 but due to some reasons, it got pushed back by a whole year. The new release might be in December 2021.
A few months back Disney announced that they are making four sequels of the big international hit, “Avatar”. In every two years, one successor movie will be released starting from Avatar 2 in 2021.
James Cameron’s Avatar 2 was supposed to be on the floor in December 2020 followed by Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. The delay in Avatar 2 will in turn push back the release dates of the next upcoming sequels. Now “Avatar 3” which was dated for 2021, will be reschrduled for 2023. The next two installments (4th and 5th) will be pushed back as well to 2025 and 2027. Well, this is of no surprise as this sequel saga has been pushed back multiple times already.
The actual plan of James Cameron was to make it a trilogy. He wanted to make two follow up movies along with the original one which did not work out. Then after the release of Avatar, Cameron again announced two sequels which he scheduled for 2014 and 2015. The movie sequels got delayed again and again until a few months back when Disney officially announced four follow up movies. They are to be in the theatres one by one in every two years starting from 2021.
Recently the sequels again got postponed by the makers although they will definately be on cards. Atleast second and third installments will definately be in making soon. Although James Cameron announced if the two sequels do not perform well on box office, he will not make 4th and 5th installment.
After buying the film and TV assets of 21st Century Fox, Disney has many movies debuts aligned for the next few years which is the major reason why Avatar 2 got delayed. The schedule is quite occupied. Recently Disney has announced three “Star Wars” movies which are yet to be titled. “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” will hit the theatres this year in December followed by three untitled successor movies planned to hit the theatres in December 2022, December 2024 and December 2026. Not just Avatar sequels but many other movie releases have also been adjusted a bit by Disney including “The new mutants” and “Gambit”.
Moreover, making a movie like Avatar is not a cake walk. The original one was a huge blockbuster which is why the bar is set pretty high for the sequels. It will take a lot of hard work and time to meet the expectations of the viewers. We hope after taking so many years the makers would come up with something which would justify the time taken to produce it!
