Whether it’s within your home, office, or a new location, moving furniture can be quite daunting and demands a lot out of you. There are many reasons for it. You are not an expert mover, and the furniture is quite heavy or expensive, you don’t have time, aren’t equipped with the right tools, technique or you simply don’t want to do it.
Hauling around the large pieces won’t be any good to you. You’ll get sweaty, tired and may strain your back, which you never want. To make this arduous task manageable, we’ve gathered some easy tips and tricks that’ll get the job done without too much fuss.
Use sliders to make your job easy
Having furniture sliders will lower the burden substantially. There are different types of sliders available in hardware stores. Some ease the sliding of furniture on grass, some on carpets and some on the floor. So, buy the right ones based on your requirement.
Place the sliders under all corners of the furniture. If it is a bed or dining table, you require four sliders to be placed under each leg with its smooth side facing the floor/ground. What it does is that it lowers the friction, and hence you’re pushing a much lighter piece now.
After placing the sliders, you cannot be careless and push the furniture casually. Carefully check to make sure that no leg slides without the slider underneath. Also, push the furniture from the lower side so that it doesn’t fall. Having sliders will make your job less laborious, and you can manage the relocation of heavy pieces within your place singlehandedly.
Get a shoulder from a shoulder dolly
A shoulder dolly is a rounded strap worn around the shoulders with a widened bottom used to hold the furniture piece. It makes the lifting easy. Instead of lowering down and taking the burden on your back and arms, now you’re using strong muscles to lift it. As you are more in an upright position, you enjoy more leverage too.
Shoulder dollies are considered best for cupboards or closets and small tables etc. However, you should not use a shoulder dolly when moving heavy furniture up or downstairs. According to orthopaedic specialists, sudden movements can impact your back, and the lower person will have to bear most of the weight.
Moving blankets can help you
If you don’t have sliders to reduce the friction, you can make use of moving blankets. They serve you dually. Firstly, your expensive furniture will be safe, and secondly, you can use them to ease the transfer from one place to another or room.
Just like sliders, you’ll lift every corner of the furniture to put the blanket underneath. Once done, you can then pull the blanket where you want to place the furniture. Do it slowly and in a continuous movement with no sudden force applied or jerks. Make sure the furniture slides along with the blanket smoothly. You may need a partner to assist you.
Moving your stuff using sliding blankets is quite helpful, but it may not serve you when you have to move furniture up or downstairs.
Small wheel trolley or moving dolly
Having a small wheel trolley, also known as moving dolly, will make the furniture repositioning a walk in the park. It is a flat metal or wood surface with a handle at the top and wheels for easy movement. They are available in different sizes.
If you decide to move a piece of furniture, just move the dolly under the furniture. After you’re sure that the entire weight is on the dolly, tilt the handle towards you and pull it towards your desired location. A wheeled trolley or moving dolly is best used for tables, dressers, cupboards, bookcases, etc.
Wheeling towards the exact place using a dolly is extremely easy compared to using sliders or shoulder dollies.
Old but glossy magazines
If you are a fan of improvisation, this is your chance to feel good about it. Magazines with glossy covers work just like sliders. They reduce the friction allowing you to haul the furniture using less effort. Your carpet, concrete, vinyl or wooden floors won’t be damaged this way.
However, chances are the magazine may get torn or destroyed. This is why we specifically mentioned using an old one. Just lift each corner to place a magazine underneath it and then push or pull to reposition the heavy furniture. It will take much less effort.
