Mother’s Day: History and Reason behind the celebration

In honor of all the mothers of the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated. To show the influence of motherhood, maternal bonds, and mothers in a family, this particular day is devoted to them. The significance of this day is as much the same as other family members honoring the day, like, Father’s Day, Siblings Day, Grandparents day.

Establishment for the holiday of Mother’s Day

In different parts of the world, it is celebrated on various days. Generally, the date for this falls between March and May. Mother’s Day occurs on Sunday, in the year 2020, in the United States. In America, Anna Jarvis took initiative for the incarnation of Mother’s Day creation. This all started in the year 1908 and it was declared as an official holiday in 1914. Jarvis, in 1908, celebrated Mother’s Day, as she held a memorial for her mother. This was done at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. St Andrew’s Methodist Church is now considered as a holy place for International Mother’s Day. She started to work on the initiative of mother’s day to make it a national holiday, in the year 1905, after her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis died. Ann Jarvis served for peace and helped wounded soldiers of the American civil war. She created a club, Mother’s Day work club, for public health issues. To honor her mother, Anna, along with some companions, observed Mother’s day as a national Holiday, in her home state of West Virginia.

At first, Jarvis made a proposal to the United States congress for making Mother’s day an official holiday. There she was mocked and her proposal was rejected. After a long-lasting effort, in some of the US States, in 1911, observed as a local holiday. Later in 1904, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation for making Mother’s Day, held on the Second Sunday of May, as a national holiday in honor of all the mothers.

After getting succeeded in her ambition, Jarvis raised against the commercialization of the holiday. By the early 1920s, Hallmark Cards and other companies started selling the card for mother’s day. She thought the idea of card making is violating the purpose of mother’s day celebration. She thought the companies are gaining Profit in the name of sentiment (mother’s day celebration is related to sentiments). Therefore, she boycotted it and raised her voice against law. She argued with people saying that cards should be replaced by handmade letters. Because it shows much more love and gratitude than cards. She protested at Candy makers’, at the meeting of American War mothers in 1925, after she was jailed for violating the law and peace. Later she apologized for her mistake and tried to make it clear about her intention.

In 1912, Anna created the Mother’s Day International Association. She stated that” Mother’s” should “be a singular possessive, for each family to honor its own mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world.” The same spelling is used by the Us President Woodrow Wilson in his 1914 presidential proclamation, in US Congress’s relevant bills.

Some other counties also adopted this way of honoring the mother from US modern tradition. In the United Kingdom this day is being observed as mothering Sunday. In Greece, it is celebrated as Eastern Orthodox. Greece follows both the Secular and religious methods of the celebration of Mother’s Day. In other countries, like Catholic countries, this day is observed as Virgin Mary Day. In Bolivia, the mother’s day celebration has been allotted a fixed date, in remembrance of a battle in which women participated to defend children. Russia celebrates International Women’s Day, to honor all the mothers, instead of Mother’s Day. Kyrgyzstan has introduced Mother’s Day recently. However, the year-wise International Women’s Day Celebration is increasing, and it’s really too good.
