Motorola launched its folding Razr phone in November last year that went on sale recently, and now received the iFixit teardown treatment. The results, as expected, were not in favor of Motorola, as the phone scored a reparability score of only 1 out of 10, which places it among the three worst phones in terms of reparability. The other two phones in this group are the Essential Phone and the HTC One. IFixit says that the Razr phone "could be the most complex phone they have torn down yet," and that is something it says.
In a video of the disassembly, iFixit removed one of the batteries and showed that to remove the other battery, the entire screen must come out. And, Motorola charges $ 299 (approximately Rs. 21,300) to replace the screen, which is surprising because, although tearing it apart, it is much more complex than other smartphones, this price is even lower than what you would have to pay for an iPhone 11 screen replacement
Some of the main problems that iFixit points out are that the charging port is welded to the main board, the multiple flexible cables make the repair even more complicated and there are external covers attached to most parts. iFixit thanked the fact that the disassembly was "non-destructive" and that only a standard Torx T3 screwdriver is needed to open the screws.
So why is reparability so important? Being one of the first folding phones, the Motorola Razr has a prominent gap between the hinge and the screen, which raises the issue of durability, since small particles can enter the phone quite easily and alter the folding mechanism . The problem with the gap was what caused the first Samsung Galaxy Fold to fail in its original form. However, the difference here is that the gap in the Motorola Razr only appears when it is in the middle of the folding process.
The Motorola Razr costs $ 1,500 (approximately Rs. 1.06 lakh) which is quite expensive. It is powered by the Snapdragon 710 processor and has 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The main screen is a 6.2-inch screen with a resolution of 876×2,142 pixels.
