OnePlus 7T Edition vs. 7T Pro vs. McLaren: Confused? These are the main differences.

Given the similar naming conventions of the OnePlus 7T, OnePlus 7T Pro Y OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition, it's easy to get confused with the OneTlus 7T phone line. Launched in the second half of last year, the OnePlus 7T is the current flagship phone of the phone manufacturer. OnePlus then followed with a handful of other variants.

The reality is that these variants They are similar, but there are some important differences to consider in their specifications, design, availability and, of course, price. I have broken down the main points below and you will also find a comparison chart of complete specifications at the end.

Design differences from the OnePlus 7T series

The 7T and 7T Pro are undoubtedly cut from the OnePlus cloth with its soft blue colors and frosted glass backs. The main difference you will see are the cameras on the back: the 7T cameras are enclosed in a circular unit, while the 7T Pro cameras are arranged in a vertical strip. All three phones have fingerprint scanners built into their screens.

The design of the 7T Pro McLaren deviates further. It is physically identical to the standard 7T Pro in terms of camera design, but the blue color has been replaced by a glossy black finish, with a subtle Damascus steel effect that shines just below the surface. There are McLaren Papaya Orange effects scattered everywhere, including a metal strip around the cameras, an orange function slider on the side and an orange stripe around the bottom half of the phone.

Screen sizes?

The 7T has a 6.55-inch screen with a resolution of 2,400×1,080 pixels. Both Pro models have larger screens of 6.67 inches with resolutions of 3,120×1,440 pixels. That gives professionals a pixel density of 516ppi, which is sharper than the 402ppi of 7T. You may not really notice the marginal increase in size of 0.12 inches in daily use, but the additional resolution increase should help those high-resolution photos and videos stand out a little more.

Note that the 7T has a tear-shaped notch that cuts the top of the screen to accommodate the front camera. Pro models do not have this since their selfie cameras slide mechanically from the top edge of the phone when necessary. As a result, their screens extend from edge to edge and remain completely intact by the notches.

What about the processor power?

All three phones include Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 855 Plus octa-core processor, with a clock speed of 2.9GHz. Both 7T and 7T Pro combine it with 8 GB of RAM, while the McLaren version comes with 12 GB of meat. It is strange then that in the benchmark tests, it is the 7T standard that delivered the best scores.

In the Geekbench 5 processor test, the 7T obtained 2,911 (multi-core), surpassing 2,854 of 7T Pro McLaren and 2,883 of 7T Pro standard. Similarly, in the 3DMark Sling Shot Unlimited graphics test, the 7T achieved an overall score of 8,782, beating the 8,720 Pro of 7T and the 8,725 of McLaren. It is true that these differences are very thin and hardly qualify as differences at all. However, it is a bit surprising that the McLaren edition, with its increase in RAM, did not produce better scores than its brothers.

These phones are more than capable of handling any of your daily tasks, including video streaming and photo editing. The game was also very easy, even with the graphically demanding game Asphalt 9: Legends, which played smoothly and did not have a noticeable drop in frame rates.

Everyone runs Android 10 software, but McLaren software has had some visual adjustments. It is mainly a darker color scheme, with a lot of orange to match the appearance of the outside of the phone.

Is the storage the same?

This is where you get more by that name "Pro". The standard OnePlus 7T comes with 128 GB of storage, while both Pro models double that with 256 GB. It is worth considering, since none of the phones have expandable storage. If you record many videos and store many files locally, opting for a higher capacity model is a smart investment.

Are the cameras the same?

All have a triple camera configuration on the back, consisting of a 48-megapixel main camera, a 16-megapixel super wide-angle camera and a telephoto camera. However, the 7T has a 12-megapixel telephoto camera, while both professionals have 8-megapixel telephoto cameras. It may seem strange that the telephoto resolution on Pro models is lower, but they offer a 3x zoom, instead of just 2x.

In my tests, the images of the three phones are crisp, with a decent exposure and precise colors. Everyone also has a dedicated macro mode, which allows you to focus on objects near the lens. It's great if you want to take close photos of, say, insects and flowers, when you're away from home. The overall quality of the camera is good, but it is not up to the best models like the Pixel 4, iPhone 11 Pro or Galaxy S10 Plus. If photography is of the utmost importance to you, it is worth considering spending more cash.

Do they use the same batteries?

The OnePlus 7T has a 3,800 mAh battery, which survived an impressive 16 hours in our battery discharge test. Pro models have slightly larger 4,085 mAh batteries, which is not a big step forward. I don't expect much difference in battery life, especially when you need to take into account slightly larger screens that absorb more battery.

As an anecdote, I was able to get a mixed-use day from the phones before they needed a recharge. Like all smartphones, I would like to give them a full recharge overnight. All phones support the ultra-fast OnePlus charging, which can take the phone from 0% to more than 60% in 30 minutes. This is great if you forgot to give your phone a boost before going out at night.

Do you have 5G?

Currently, these three phones do not have a 5G version. If you want to use a OnePlus phone in a fast 5G network, you must choose the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G – which is available in the United Kingdom and the American company Sprint.

Price and availability.

As expected, given its elegant brand and additional RAM, the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren edition is the most expensive of the three phones, priced at £ 799. For now, it is only available in the United Kingdom and Europe, but as reference, that price becomes around $ 1,010 or AU $ 1,515.

The normal 7T Pro is also not available in the US. UU. Or Australia, but its price in the UK of £ 699 becomes approximately $ 895 or AU $ 1,330. The standard OnePlus 7T is available in the US. UU. And it will cost you $ 599 or £ 549. It is not officially sold in Australia, but that price becomes approximately AU $ 1,045.

What about the other OnePlus phones for 2019?

The 7T series is not the only range of phones that the company launched last year. In May 2019, it launched OnePlus 7, 7 Pro and 7 Pro 5G.

OnePlus 7 has a smaller 6.44-inch screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 (but not the fastest Plus version) and 6 or 8GB of RAM, depending on where you buy it. It also has a notch on the screen to accommodate the front camera and a dual camera on the back with a standard and telephoto lens.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 7 Pro has a 6.67-inch screen, the same Snapdragon 855 chip, a triple rear camera configuration on the back (normal, telephoto and super wide) and has the pop-up selfie camera found in the 7T Pros

Finally, we have the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, which, as mentioned earlier, is simply a 5G-enabled version of the 7 Pro.
