Introduction to The Boys
The Boys is a new show on Amazon Prime streaming. It’s a crime drama that has some similarities with The Wire and Breaking Bad but also features elements of Pulp Fiction and Donnie Brasco. It follows the inner workings of a small criminal organization in Chicago, the titular “boys” who are led by Patrick ‘Patsy’ Caputo, played by James McAvoy. The show is like a modern-day remake of the Godfather, but with more guns and fewer Italian accents. Instead of being based on a family, the Boys are based loosely on the men who killed JFK.

The storyline of The Boys
This is the question that Erik Larsen attempts to answer in his series of graphic novels, with the first issue published in 2010. The premise of the series is that a group of vigilante superheroes – who call themselves “The Boys” – have decided to take on corruption and evil within other superhero teams as well as on Earth. They do this because they no longer feel like doing anything meaningful or having any sense of purpose. They live in a world that is overwhelmingly saturated with celebrities and superheroes who are more concerned with making money and promoting themselves than they are about doing anything truly good.
More about The Boys
Patsy is the main character, and he’s one of the best parts of The Boys because he’s so mysterious. Since he’s always at least partially obscured by shadow or obscuring objects, it is hard to get a read on his face. There are very few moments when his face is shown in full from any angle, and most characters have a hard time reading him as well. He’s a very quiet and calculating character who keeps his emotions hidden behind the facade of a Japanese Geisha, but there is something much more sinister at work than what we’re seeing. Patrick is a highly intelligent man, but he has no interest in being in the spotlight or getting headlines. He just wants to sit back, relax and enjoy his family’s money. He can get violent, as he did recently when he killed an “enemy” but we rarely see any strong emotions from him.
