When will The Away Season 2 release?
The continuing Series will once again be made up of 10 episodes, that will be aired on Netflix on demand. The first episode will start in 2021-09-03. Detailed episodes list provided in this table.
The 2nd season of TV Show Away is approaching, with fans eager to see Hilary Swank’s Emma Green back in action. It is expected at 2021-09-03 same time as previously. Here’s all we know about the upcoming season of Andrew Hinderaker’s drama.
Netflix first ordered Away back in 2018. The series was inspired by astronaut Scott Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko’s one-year-long mission at the International Space Station from 2015-2016 (the title and jumping-off point of the series was journalist Chris Jones’ 2014 story on Kelly.) The mission’s intent was to measure the effect of space on the human body in order to better plan for longer missions.
Netflix’s series imagines the consequence of this endeavor: a manned mission to Mars. Also, as the series logline reads, “an epic love story and a thrilling tale of survival.”
The series was initially ordered for 10 episodes and with a budget likely over $6 million per episode. (It’s possible the series was even more expensive than the streaming service’s other sci-fi properties like Stranger Things and Altered Carbon.)
Away made it all the way up to #1 on Netflix’s top 10, generating, what we assume, was decently high viewership numbers. It was sci-fi soap and extremely binge-able. The first season also ended while the story’s 3-year mission was only partly complete; there was still lots of drama left to be had.
What is the plot of Away Season 2?
A little over a month after its September 2020 premiere, the Hilary Swank sci-fi drama Away was canceled by Netflix. The cancellation of Away was a bit of a surprise, considering it had the kind of skilled, engaging cast that would attract you to a new Netflix show, as well as an intriguing premise. To that point, Away (created by Penny Dreadful’s Andrew Hinderaker) followed an international team of astronauts embarking on a three-year mission to Mars.
Over the course of Away’s first season, viewers followed the team’s journey primarily through the perspective of Emma Green (Swank), the team’s leader. But, despite a solid performance between its premiere and mid-October cancellation announcement, Away’s run on Netflix was short-lived.
Just five months after Away’s cancellation, Collider had the chance to discuss the sci-fi drama with one of its executive producers, Jessica Goldberg. Goldberg served as an EP on the show alongside Jason Katims, Matt Reeves, Edward Zwick, Adam Kassan, Jeni Mulein, and Swank.
Goldberg is also the co-writer on the new Russo brothers Apple TV+ movie Cherry, which was the primary reason she was speaking with Collider’s own Christina Radish. Amidst all of the Cherry chat, we wanted to discuss Away with Goldberg, too, and hopefully gain more intel about what the future of the show could have been if it had been renewed.

What are reviews from critics?
The away season is a thoughtful and touching drama about human beings shaped by the world they inhabit.
Away has always had an intriguing premise, but it never quite found its footing in Season One. The away season improves on that considerably while also building out its central mystery into something more interesting than just a vague existential threat…
For all of Away’s flaws, away feels like one of those TV shows where the creators were given enough time to plan for future seasons. It makes me want to see what comes next–and I’m not sure if anyone would have said that before watching this away season.
What are reviews from audiences?
Please renew away! As someone who binge-watches television regularly, I can honestly say there aren’t many shows as original and gripping away.
Away is my favorite show on tv right now! I am so excited for the away season to come back in a few months.
