When you have a sudden plumbing emergency you undoubtedly reach for the number of a qualified and reputable plumber Sydney to resolve the issue for you. This is a good move, they have the expertise and equipment to identify issues and resolve them quickly.
However, while most people assume a plumbing issue is simply related to old pipes or poor maintenance, there are times when a recurring issue is telling you there is something else wrong. In fact, a recurring plumbing issue can be an indication that you have foundation issues! That is not something you can afford to ignore.
Slow Drains
Most homeowners have experienced slow drains. They are generally a sign that you have a clog in the pipes. One slow drain means an issue with the pipework from the appliance. Multiple slow drains mean an issue with the main sewer line.
In many cases, this is caused by a clog which can be cleared and the problem solved. But, if the slow drains keep reoccurring they may be a sign of a foundation issue.
In fact, the easiest way to tell is to insert a sewer camera into your drains. If the clog can be cleared then there is a good chance the sewer pipe has collapsed. There are several reasons why this would happen, including old age and tree roots.
But, the crux of the issue is that the wastewater from your home has been going into the soil instead of the sewer system. This softens the ground around your home and can cause the foundations to sink. You will start to see cracks in the walls of your home and the floor of your basement.
Gurgling Noises
Gurgling in your pipes, especially when water is going down the drains, means that there is air in the system. Your drains are also likely to be slow and the flush on your toilet is not likely to be powerful enough to eradicate the waste.
This generally means there is a blockage in your air vent pipe, preventing the air from leaving the system properly. The good news is that the air vent can usually be unblocked, effectively, resolving the issue.
Rising Damp or Wet Floors
If your lower floors appear damp or have a puddle on the floor then you may have a leak in your foundations. A lot of older homes were built with copper water pipes in the foundations. It was an effective way to get the water around the build.
Unfortunately, over time the pipes will perish and allow water out of them. This will move through the foundations. In the process, it will rise up and come through the floor. Of course, the fact that your foundation has cracks in it has the potential to cause structural issues to your home. You will need to chat with a specialist to get the issue resolved.
Don’t forget to check your water bill regularly. If the cost keeps going up and there is no obvious reason for this you may have a leak. This can penetrate the foundations and soften them. If you suspect a foundation issue the sooner you react the better.
