A follow-up to the movie “Waterworld” is happening. The new show will be on TV. The people who made the movie have been working on it for a while now and they say that it is almost finished. Davis told Collider that Dan Trachtenberg is going to direct it. The show will pick up with the movie’s characters 20 years later. There is not a platform that we know of, but people close to the project say it might be on UCP
In a world that is covered in water, there’s not much land left. The ice has melted and the sea level has risen. It’s 25,000 feet high. Kevin Costner stars in the movie “Waterworld”. He is also a producer. The film was written by Peter Rader and David Twohy, and directed by Kevin Reynolds. Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tina Majorino, and Dennis Hopper were also in the film.
At the time, Waterworld was the most expensive movie ever made. It did not get good reviews. The people who saw it liked the futuristic setting and plot but did not like how it was done or acted. This movie had a lot of money put in it. The movie was not able to get back its budget from people buying tickets. Then, later, people bought the DVD and other things that made the film profitable again. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound.
Is really the “WaterWorld” Sequel TV show Is coming?
Proving that in the streaming era, every well-known genre title has reboot potential: A TV series sequel to the 1995 film Waterworld is in the works.
The movie producers talked to Collider and The Hollywood Reporter. They are making a new movie for Universal Content Productions.
The project is planned as a continuation of the film picking up with the same characters 20 years later, though no actors are yet attached. The producers have said that Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) is on board to direct.
What is the plot of the “WaterWorld” Series?
Waterworld was the story of a post-apocalyptic world where the polar ice caps had melted (the film was admittedly prescient on the global warming front) and the entire planet was covered by water. Kevin Costner played an underwater-breathing, web-toed trimaran-sailing loner, The Mariner, who came to aid of a woman (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and a girl (Tina Majorino) seeking the fabled “dry land.”
Who is the director of the movie?
The film, directed by Kevin Reynolds, saw its budget swell because of production troubles. One problem was that a hurricane hit the set in Hawaii and it had to be rebuilt.
What is the other information related to it?
At present, there’s no word if Costner could actually return for the series, but at age 66, it’s unclear if the two-time Oscar-winner would be up for a series that is sure to require a considerable amount of physicality. Also unknown is what sort of direction the series would go in.
Those who have seen the original film will recall that it ended with dry land having indeed been discovered, but Costner’s The Mariner character decides that it’s best for him to return to the sea. With the knowledge that dry land does exist in this unappealing future, audiences will be coming into the Waterworld series with a different mindset than audiences did for the film upon its release. Then again, as the series takes place 20 years on from the film’s ending, perhaps the environment has worsened and dry land is even harder to come by.
Of course, the issues that led to Waterworld’s failures at the box office back in 1995 can’t all be put down to an extremely costly film that didn’t live up to its budget. Many would argue its plotting and downright dull storyline played a major part in this too. There is, however, the argument that Waterworld was ahead of its time. If that was the case, then a new TV series based on the concept could provide a second chance at the critical recognition the film never quite managed to achieve.
