One of the most important decisions you will make as a mother is whether to breastfeed or use baby formula.
There is a current debate going on in the mothering world as to what option mothers should choose. But the truth is that every mother is different, so there is no one hard and fast rule as to what option to choose. It is an individual choice that needs to be made in the best interest of both the mother and the baby.
So we’re here to help with that decision making and share everything you need to know about baby formulas like Bobbie.
7 important things to know about formulas
1. There are three different types of formulas
When it comes to baby formulas, there are three different types to choose from. The first is powder formulas, which use water to mix it up. The second are concentrates, which need to use water to dilute the formula. And the third is pre-made liquids that are ready to be used in the baby’s bottle immediately. All three produce the same result, with the major difference being how much money you want to spend on the formulas.
2. There are also specialized formulas
To make things a bit more complicated, there are actually a few more special formulas out there that cater to the sensitivities of certain babies. This includes cow milk formulas, soy milk formulas, hypoallergenic formulas and special formulas that are designed to help babies who are born prematurely and as a result, are underweight.
3. It’s okay to try a few out
You don’t have to know right away which formula your baby will take to best. In most cases, it is totally acceptable to try a few different types of formulas to see which your baby responds best to and also enjoys the most. But once you find the formula that is the winner, try to consistently stick with that one. That is because a baby’s body and organs are constantly changing, so it needs regularity to continue growing in a healthy way. Mixing it up too much can lead to them having digestive discomfort amongst other things.
4. Don’t forget the bottles
Just throwing this one out there as it is too often overlooked. But if you are going the baby formula route, then don’t forget the bottle itself too! Babies are not able to drink out of normal cups, so you will want to find an appropriately sized bottle with a nipple top to pour the formula into. These will obviously need to be cleaned regularly and because of how often your baby will be drinking the formula, you may actually want to invest in a collection of multiple bottles to keep your life easier.
5. Making it on the spot is always best
We get it, you likely live a busy life, and sometimes preparing meals in advance—especially formulas—can help make the day easier. In general, though, preparing the formula and giving it to your baby with as little time in between as possible is a great way to go. But there is also the option to prepare a few and store them in your fridge for no more than a day. And if your formula bottle gets left outside of the fridge for a few hours or so, discard it to be on the safe side!
6. The quantity is always changing
It is important to remember that the among of formula your baby will need will constantly evolve as they grow themselves. For example, a newborn baby would need an ounce or so of formula during each feeding session. But a 6-month-old baby will need around 8 ounces per feeding session! But, it is equally essential to not overdo it with the formulas. A great rule of thumb to follow is ensuring that your baby—no matter how young or old they are—never drink over 32 ounces of formula in a day.
7. You can still form a special connection with formulas
One of the biggest reasons why many mothers choose to breastfeed is because of the connection they create with their babies. But that is not to say that mothers who feed their baby with formula can not form an equally fulfilling connection as well. You can still cuddle your baby as you support their body while drinking and create a loving environment to share the experience in.
At the end of the day, it’s all about nurturing—no matter what method you choose! The choice is yours and we support you no matter what.
