Avengers: Doomsday Box Office: Russo Brothers Likely To Match James Cameron’s Blockbuster Record With Their Next Marvel Epic

Globally recognized filmmaker James Cameron holds a unique and unprecedented record at the worldwide box office. As Avengers: Doomsday prepares for its global release in December, the Russo brothers now have the opportunity to match Cameron’s streak. Read on for all the details.

James Cameron is the only director with three $2 billion+ movies worldwide

Cameron has directed some of the biggest blockbusters in Hollywood history. He stands alone as the only filmmaker to direct three movies that have each crossed the $2 billion+ threshold globally. Sitting at the top spot is Avatar with a $2.9 billion global haul, which also makes it the highest-grossing film of all time. The sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, also surpassed the $2 billion mark worldwide. Released more than ten years after the original, it currently ranks as the fourth-highest-grossing movie globally.

Box Office Mojo reports that Avatar: The Way of Water earned $2.33 billion globally, though it was pushed out of the all-time top three grossers by Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The third James Cameron film to surpass $2 billion is Titanic. Widely regarded as a classic, it brought in a lifetime worldwide total of $2.26 billion, cementing his status as the only director with three films in the $2 billion+ club.

Russo brothers likely to match James Cameron’s extraordinary box office feat

Apart from James Cameron, the Russo brothers are the only other directors with two movies grossing over $2 billion, though they have yet to match Cameron’s three-film streak. However, they now have a shot at replicating that record. Avengers: Doomsday marks their comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, generating immense anticipation and drawing $50 million in domestic pre-sales, according to reports.

Avengers: Doomsday gives the Russo brothers a strong chance to equal James Cameron’s blockbuster streak. Much like the preceding two Avengers movies, this entry is projected to pass the $2 billion milestone globally. For context, Avengers: Endgame hauled $2.79 billion while Avengers: Infinity War grossed $2.05 billion.

What is Avengers: Doomsday about?

The story centers on heroes from three separate universes joining forces 14 months after the events of Thunderbolts to fight off the existential danger presented by Doctor Doom. The Avengers, the Wakandans, and the New Avengers from Earth-616 team up with the Fantastic Four from Earth-828 and the classic X-Men hailing from another reality. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18.
