Clayface is not only the next DCU movie but also a popular Batman villain. The movie hardly has the buzz of any other DC movie, including Joker, which is also a franchise based on a Batman villain. Matt Hagen, aka Clayface, is not explored much by the filmmakers, and thus, this will be a great opportunity for the DCU to establish one of Batman’s most popular comic book villains. The film has a decent budget and would have to hit a major milestone worldwide just to break even. Keep scrolling for the deets.
The film will be released in a few days, and there is still not much promotion for it. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is directed by James Watkins, the director of Speak No Evil and Black Mirror. Horror legend Mike Flanagan wrote the screenplay for this horror film. It is expected to do well since the film is releasing around Halloween.
According to early estimates, the DCU horror movie was tracking to earn far less than even Supergirl’s domestic debut. This might seem underwhelming, but when compared to its budget, this is a win-win for Clayface, and we will dive into it later in this article. Media reports suggest that Clayface is tracking to earn between $23 million and $33 million in its opening weekend in North America. Compared to the Joker franchise, both the films led by Joaquin Phoenix earned more than this predicted range.

Joker collected $96.2 million in its debut weekend while the sequel raked in $37.7 million. The second part emerged as a massive flop at the box office. Meanwhile, 2019’s Joker became one of the top-grossing R-rated movies ever. Clayface is also a Batman villain, but it might not achieve such huge box-office success.
According to reports, the DCU movie had a production budget of $40 million, making it a fairly low-budget production. Therefore, to break even, the film must earn $100 million at the box office. To become profitable, it will have to earn more than $100 million. Clayface could achieve it if the film is well-received by viewers.
The film follows Matt Hagen, a rising movie star who a local mob boss and volunteers brutally disfigure for an experimental procedure to restore his original face. However, the treatment triggers a series of horrifying physical and psychological side effects, transforming his body into living clay. Clayface will be released on October 23.
