Jailer 2 is undoubtedly the biggest Kollywood release of 2026, with Rajinikanth reprising his role of Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer. With the sequel factor, the film naturally carries the buzz, but some predictions suggest it might just fall short of Coolie’s opening day across India. The biggest reason behind such predictions is the mixed response to the film’s music. Nonetheless, a big start is definitely on the cards, and all eyes are set on how it opens at the Tamil Nadu box office.
High expectations from Jailer 2
The performance in the home state will be closely watched by box-office enthusiasts because it’s a sequel to a blockbuster film. For those who don’t know, Jailer started its run with the opening day of 22 crore, and with strong word-of-mouth, it wrapped up at a whopping 189.35 crore gross. With such success, expectations for the sequel are sky-high.
Jailer 2 is likely to beat Coolie, but grabbing the top spot looks impossible
The biggest Rajinikanth opener at the Tamil Nadu box office is Coolie, which opened at 29 crore gross approx. It had tremendous buzz due to the combo of Rajini and Lokesh Kanagaraj. On top of that, it had chartbuster music. In the case of Jailer 2, the factor of Nelson is there as the director enjoys goodwill among audiences, but this time, Anirudh’s music has turned out to be disappointing. With a good music album, the buzz would have been much higher. Still, things are looking bright.

Jailer 2 is aiming for the biggest ever opening for Rajinikanth, overtaking his Coolie (29 crore), and is likely to score around 30-31 crore gross on the opening day. However, grabbing the top spot by dethroning Thalapathy Vijay’s Beast (35 crore) looks impossible. So, the dream of record opening at the Tamil Nadu box office is likely to remain unfulfilled.
Take a look at the top opening days in Tamil Nadu (gross):
- Beast – 35 crore
- Leo – 34 crore
- Sarkar – 31.75 crore
- The Greatest Of All Time – 30.5 crore
- Coolie – 29 crore
