Elden Ring Box Office: A24’s Biggest-Ever Production Needs A Massive Worldwide Haul To Turn Profitable

Elden Ring is the upcoming dark fantasy action film by A24, based on a video game. Its production cost has reportedly grown a bit too much, making it the most expensive A24 movie ever. It is almost as expensive as Marvel movies and other big-studio films. Therefore, it already had a steep break-even target to become profitable at the worldwide box office. Keep scrolling for the deets.

It is an epic dark fantasy action film directed by Alex Garland, which is based on the video game of the same name. The film also has a solid star cast comprising Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Emma Laird, Peter Serafinowicz, and Jonathan Pryce. According to reports, the buzz around the movie is promising yet cautious, as fans are concerned about whether the live-action adaptation will do justice to one of gaming’s most intricate and mysterious universes.

Budget and break-even analysis

Elden Ring is undoubtedly one of A24‘s most ambitious movies, and it has reportedly become their most expensive as well. Directed by Alex Garland, the video game adaptation has a massive budget of around $200 million excluding the post-production costs [via IGN]. The figure is almost three times the $70 million budget of Marty Supreme, the studio’s costliest production to date, and significantly higher than Civil War‘s reported $50 million budget. If accurate, the investment would put Alex Garland’s fantasy adaptation on par with major studio blockbusters, marking a significant departure from A24’s traditionally modest-budget filmmaking strategy.

It should be noted that these are not even the official numbers, and the post-production costs will also be added to them. Based on these numbers, the film also has to reach a major box-office milestone to break even and become profitable. Applying the industry’s 2.5x rule, the film’s break-even target at this early stage is $500 million. Therefore, the film will have to earn more than $500 million to become a financial success.

What is the film about?

The film follows events in the Lands Between, where the powerful Elden Ring has been shattered, scattering its fragments among corrupted demigods who now wield its power. Elden Ring is scheduled to be released on March 3, 2028.
