Street Fighter North America Box Office: Scores 2nd Biggest Opening Day For A Fighting Game Adaptation

The Hollywood film Street Fighter hit theaters worldwide on October 16. There is considerable chatter and anticipation surrounding the film, and the numbers have delivered. The film, which is an adaptation of a fighting game, has made franchise history with its opening.

Paramount Pictures released the movie, which features a star-studded cast, including Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Callina Liang, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, Eric André, Andrew Schulz, Vidyut Jammwal, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and Jason Momoa. The film has received a B- on CinemaScore and may see a dip ahead due to mixed word-of-mouth from audiences and critics.

How Much Did Street Fighter Earn At The Box Office On Day 1?

The film has recorded a strong opening, as predicted. It has set a franchise record in just one day at the North American box office. With a gross of $13 million on its opening day, the film has taken the #1 spot at the domestic box office. It has recorded the second-biggest opening day ever for a fighting video game adaptation. It trails only Mortal Kombat II, which earned $16.8 million, including $4 million from Thursday previews.

Interestingly, the film has earned twice as much as any previous Street Fighter movie made during its entire opening weekend. The film is aiming for a massive debut weekend of 30 million–35 million at the US box office. This would give it the second-biggest opening ever for a fighting game adaptation domestically, behind Mortal Kombat II. It would also mark the biggest opening for the Street Fighter franchise, surpassing the 1994 film’s $6.9 million opening weekend and The Legend of Chun-Li’s $4.7 million debut.

What Is The Film About?

The film follows estranged street fighters Ryu and Ken Masters as they reunite after Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament, a brutal showdown fuelled by skill, fate, and fury. However, they soon uncover a deadly conspiracy that forces them to fight each other while confronting the demons of their past.

Street Fighter was released on October 16.
