The Odyssey North America Box Office: Christopher Nolan’s Epic Eyes The $600M Milestone This Weekend

Holding strong at the top of the North American box office, The Odyssey is maintaining its #1 position and preparing to cross another significant domestic milestone this weekend. The film is also drawing closer to overtaking The Avengers to break into the all-time domestic top 15 grossers. Read on for the exact figures and where the movie currently stands.

Christopher Nolan remains widely celebrated as one of today’s premier filmmakers. Known for packing his projects with intricate details, he excels at transforming intellectually ambitious concepts into massive mainstream events. Nolan is a prime example of a director-driven property where the filmmaker functions as the brand itself. While an ensemble cast certainly helps, it is ultimately his directorial magic that drives the success.

Less than $10 million away from surpassing the $600 million milestone in North America

For those keeping track, The Odyssey is currently the sole holdover pulling in over $1 million domestically. It has achieved a 56-day streak above the $1 million mark—the longest run ever for an R-rated feature, surpassing Obsession‘s previous 55-day record. Nolan’s picture brought in a robust $1.2 million on its eighth Thursday in North America, marking the sixth-largest eighth Thursday in history and representing a 33.1% decline from the previous Thursday.

Data from Box Office Mojo shows that The Odyssey reached a domestic total of $593.1 million by its eighth Thursday. It sits less than $7 million shy of the $600 million domestic threshold. The mythological epic is projected to pull in roughly $8 million over its ninth weekend, which will push it past this major domestic milestone.

More about the movie

The project stands as Universal’s second-highest-grossing domestic release of all time. Securing the #1 position would require overtaking Jurassic World and its lifetime domestic haul of $653.4 million. Even so, the feature is currently tracking toward a final domestic gross between $615 million and $630 million. Its domestic performance outpaces Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has since slipped below the $1 million threshold.

Produced on a reported budget of $250 million, the mythological epic has generated more than $1.64 billion globally. Featuring Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, The Odyssey opened in theaters on July 17.
