Santosh Davakhar’s movie Gondhal has been selected to represent India at the 2027 Academy Awards. Chosen out of 33 entries, the film will compete in the Best International Feature category.
Before moving into cinema, Davakhar served as a social activist and professor. His directing style was heavily shaped by his experiences viewing global cinema at the Cannes Film Festival.
The feature film is inspired by the traditional Gondhal ritual and folk-performance arts native to Maharashtra.
