Fantasy Island Tv Show at Fox: Cast, Plot, Theme
The Fantasy Island tv show was one of the most popular and successful shows on television during the late 1970s. Fantasy Island focused on a fictitious island resort where people could come to live out their fantasies. The title sequence showed a plane flying toward Fantasy Island as it rose from the sea like Atlantis. Fantasy Island was more than just a place that host Mr . Roarke (Ricardo Montalban) took people to; Fantasy Island was a character in itself.
The Fantasy Island tv show made several significant entertainment industry “firsts” during its run. Fantasy Island was the first Tv series to have a licensed action figure line and video game based on the characters and plot of the show. Fantasy Island also had an interactive board game published for it, making Fantasy Island one of the first shows to be marketed to children–and adults–in this way.
Fantasy Island is believed to be one of the earliest instances of product placement on television as well, with both Coca-Cola and Mattel paying Sony Pictures Television for prominent placement of their products throughout episodes; Coke would later pay again to feature Fantasy Island in a Tv special promoting the soft drink, Fantasy Island: Escape to Paradise. Fantasy Island was very popular with children during its run and was also popular with baby boomers. Fantasy Island remains a cult classic amongst many fans of television series from the 1970s and 1980s, both in the United States and abroad.
For his work on Fantasy Island, Anthony received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design for a Series (1978) and won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Special Visual Effects (1980). He is currently still active as an actor playing the role of “Uncle Al” in the film Dear John.

Fantasy Island also had a catchphrase, spoken by the mysterious Mr. Roarke (Ricardo Montalban) whenever someone fulfilled their fantasy, “Your wish is my command”. The word me – ‘mah-he’ or ‘may he’s with the first vowel sound elongated as if moving in closer to your ear – was put into quotations because of the possibility that it might have been used by Haitian voodoo practitioners as a spell uttered during rituals for Roarke’s character.
An example of this is portrayed in the Fantasy Island 2008 movie with Mo’Nique’s character.
