Forgotten Island, an animated fantasy comedy rooted in Filipino folklore, prepares for a global rollout this weekend. Its North American box-office debut, however, is not expected to turn heads, nor will the film capture the #1 position on the domestic charts as Avengers: Endgame Encore arrives in theaters. Set in the Philippines during the 1990s, the film was helmed by directors Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado and produced by DreamWorks Animation. The voice cast features H.E.R., Liza Soberano, Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy, Ronny Chieng, and Lea Salonga. Upon publication, the animated feature launched with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Forgotten Island’s opening weekend projection in North America
Variety reports that Forgotten Island is targeting respectable figures during its domestic opening. Tracking indicates the animated movie will bring in between $15 million and $17 million across North American theaters over the weekend, positioning it at #4 in the domestic rankings.

The top spot in the domestic rankings remains out of reach for Forgotten Island. That crown is projected to go to Avengers: Endgame Encore, which is tracking for a reissue opening between $25 million and $28 million at the North American box office. Second place is expected to go to Resident Evil as it enters its second weekend. Additional new releases hitting theaters include Primetime and The Heart of the Beast.
What is the film about?
The story centers on best friends Jo and Raissa, who discover a mysterious portal leading to the magical island of Nakali. There, they meet mythical beings from Filipino folklore and confront the fearsome Manananggal. Learning that the toll for returning home is the loss of their memories of one another, the pair must escape the island before their bond is forgotten forever. Forgotten Island opens on September 25.
