For those that are fortunate enough to have a backyard, a shed is a brilliant addition which could make a big difference to your garden, home and life. A shed can be a highly practical and convenient addition to the garden and even used for more than just storage, plus they are not too challenging to build yourself when you know how.
Planning
The key when it comes to planning your shed is choosing the right space and having somewhere with a hard, level base whether this is a concrete base, interlocking plastic system on firm ground or treated wooden beams on flattened hard-core or shingle. You will also need to think about how big you want the shed to be and what it will be used for.
Materials
In terms of material, you have a few options but you cannot go wrong with straight, tight-grain wood and how much you need will depend on the size of the shed. Remember to treat anything that is touching the concrete slab or surrounding ground to preserve the shed. You may also want roof felt and glass for any windows.
Tools
There are a range of tools that you will need to build a shed, including drill drivers which can make the construction process much easier. Other key tools for building a shed include a saw, claw hammer, framing square, fasteners, measuring tape and safety equipment.
Key Stages
If your floor panel is not already attached to the joists you will need to lay out the joists underneath the floor sheet and fix the first joints under the long outer edges before putting the remaining joists evenly between them.
For the walls, you need to mark the exact point centre point of each wall and on the shed floor so that you can line them up. You can use a scrap piece of wood to hold the wall in place and then position and fix a side panel. You can do the same with the other walls before fixing the roof support bar and nailing the roof panels in place. You can then roll out the roofing felt, secure the felt and apply sealant to the outside corners. It is then a case of fixing the walls to the floor and then finishing off with the windows and door.
A garden shed can make a huge difference to your backyard, home and even your life and it is also a feature which can be relatively easy to build yourself and hopefully this post will help you to get started.
