The Masters of the Universe (also called Masters Of The Universe), usually in short form Motu, is a media franchise created by Mattel. The original Masters of the Universe storyline was conceived by Mattel’s design team, with help from Filmation, who produced a pilot film for what became Masters of the Universe.
A more sophisticated doll line followed, with accompanying action figures which featured moving parts. He-Man was originally perceived as a character aimed at young boys, thus most early promotional material featured only images of the muscular swordsman and his nemesis Skeletor. Masters of the Universe’s original premise was that Prince Adam transformed into He-Man by holding aloft his magic sword, which later came to be known as the Sword of Power. Masters of the Universe also includes several Filmation cartoon series and a number of spin-off products.
A second Masters of the Universe comic book mini-series debuted in July 2008. Written by Keith Giffen and Bill Mumy, this new miniseries draws upon 4001 A.D., an unpublished Masters Of The Universe sequel concept developed by Mattel in 1987 which was never used due to falling sales with their Master’s related merchandise. Set on Eternia many years after King Randor has died, Prince Adam is now king, and no one, not even he is aware that he’s He-Man.
But when the villainous Skeletor returns with a new scheme to conquer Eternia and Earth, Teela and Masters now known as Adam must figure out how to help him realize his destiny before it’s too late.
With Masters of the Universe Vintage being bought out within months of its debut and Masters of the Universe Classics proving to be a worthy successor, it was only right that Masters of the Universe Revelation would follow in its path and meet fan approval.
What’s Masters of the Universe Revelation? Masters of the Universe Revelation is an upcoming Masters of the Universe subline featuring He-Man and Skeletor figures from Mattel’s new MOTU Classics continuity (2010 – present), sporting modern articulation and under a more collector-friendly pricepoint. This line is meant to act as Masters of the Universe’s equivalent to DC Universe Classics, Marvel Legends, or Star Wars The Legacy Collection.
