The shared universe, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters. The MCU officially began with Iron Man (2008), which was released by Paramount Pictures, and was distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures as part of a multi-film agreement. In 2012 Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion, which lead to them releasing The Avengers in May 2015 through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
