Other Mommy North America Box Office: Suffers A Bigger 2nd-Weekend Crash Than Scream 5, The Black Phone & Longlegs

Jessica Chastain’s latest film, Other Mommy, has been hit by terrible word-of-mouth. The R-rated horror film claimed the #1 spot at the US box office during its opening weekend. However, the film has now crashed in its second weekend. The horror film has been affected by new releases and poor word of mouth, despite the latest releases having a limited impact at the box office.

The R-rated horror film had a strong opening weekend, which helped boost its total collection. Moreover, owing to its low production costs, the film is expected to be profitable despite the poor word of mouth. However, in its second weekend, the film dropped to #3 at the domestic box office.

The Jessica Chastain-starrer earned $2.2 million on its second Sunday at the domestic box office, marking a 64% drop from its first Sunday. The film’s second-weekend total stands at $8.25 million, a 70% drop from its opening-weekend collection of $27.79 million.

Other Mommy’s second-weekend drop is steeper than those of other hit horror films, including The Black Phone ($12.2 million), Longlegs ($2 million), The Exorcist: Believer ($11 million), and Scream 5 ($12.2 million). The film’s US cumulative collection has reached $44.9 million. Overseas, its total gross stands at $33.9 million, bringing its worldwide total to $78.7 million.

More About Other Mommy

Based on the bestselling novel by Josh Malerman, Other Mommy is a shocking new nightmare that follows Bela, a young girl who forms a relationship with a sinister entity in her home that looks uncannily like her own mother. As the entity befriends Bela, she soon finds herself being hunted by the very presence that has entered her life.

It is rare for any film, much less a horror film, to be narratively structured around a young child. Making matters even more challenging, Other Mommy is told from the perspective of seven-year-old Bela, who appears in almost every scene. The role demands a depth and range of emotion that few child actors could achieve. It is no exaggeration to say that the film hinged on this casting decision.
