Resident Evil continues to hold the top spot in domestic box office rankings, and the horror reboot has now outpaced another prominent video game adaptation in North America. Specifically, it has beaten the lifetime domestic box-office haul of the original Mortal Kombat film.

Achieving franchise-best numbers, the horror feature pulled in $4.5 million domestically on its first Wednesday. This marked the 5th-biggest Wednesday of all time for R-rated horror films, despite a 35.2% decline from its discounted opening Tuesday. It also stands as the 5th biggest Wednesday ever recorded for a video game adaptation, bringing its cumulative total to $76.9 million in just 6 days.
Resident Evil surpasses the OG Mortal Kombat
Released in theaters in 1995, Mortal Kombat launched the film series and remains the second-highest-grossing movie in the franchise. According to Box Office Mojo, that original film grossed $70.4 million over its lifetime.
