Following an extended hiatus—long enough for audiences to forget that the previous season of The Great Indian Kapil Show lacked sufficient entertainment—the series has returned for its fifth season. This time around, the show has incorporated a laugh directly into its title jingle, dubbed “Hasi ka Tyo-ha-ha-ha-haar.” The premiere episode features the cast of Drishyam 3 as its opening guests, appearing just days ahead of the film’s theatrical release. It is a smart promotional move, yet the actual humor vanished immediately.
Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Mrunal Jadhav, and Jaideep Ahlawat joined director Abhishek Pathak on the season premiere, which adopts a festive atmosphere. While the setup serves as a welcoming premise for a season opener, the initial conversation failed to spark viewer interest or generate laughs before the sketches commenced.
The One Time Sunil Grover Did Not Impress!
Sunil Grover’s new persona was kept strictly under wraps, raising expectations that he would finally deliver long-awaited humor in the concluding segment. He debuted an imitation of Ajay Devgn—a concept that, on paper, should have been a standout moment. Typically, Grover impersonating any prominent star serves as the most reliable approach on Kapil’s program. On this occasion, however, the routine misfired and the act fell flat.

Unexpectedly, Jaideep Ahlawat—known for an intensity-driven career—was brought into a dance routine alongside the revived Sona-Mona pairing of Krushna Abhishek and Kiku Sharda, evidently relying on the classic trope of making a serious actor do something silly. Ultimately, the only element that truly worked was Ajay Devgn’s delivery of dry one-liners scattered across the episode.
In truth, very little succeeds in the season premiere of The Great Indian Kapil Show. Sunil Grover’s impression of Ajay Devgn remains just an imitation rather than a genuinely funny performance. The Sona-Mona skit featuring Krushna and Kiku dancing to “Hasi Ka Tyo-ha-ha-ha-haar” provided the sole instance where actual laughter could be heard during a show explicitly marketed around fun, comedy, and entertainment.
Season 5 faced a singular objective with its premiere: to entertain following a lengthy break. Instead, this return appears weighed down by format fatigue. The guests are putting in effort, alongside Kapil, Krushna, Kiku, Sunil Grover, Archana Puran Singh, and Navjot Singh Sidhu, but sincere effort does not guarantee effective execution.
The banter linking Kapil, Archana Puran Singh, and the supporting actors leans heavily on recycled jabs concerning Archana’s boisterous laughter or her physical appearance. Furthermore, having an entire cast sit and converse solely among those three individuals felt noticeably awkward. If this represents the “Hasi Ka Tyo-ha-ha-ha-haar” promised in the promotional clips, then either personal comedic sensibilities have vanished, or the ability to laugh has been lost entirely. The Great Indian Kapil Show debuts on a sluggish note. Although the star power of the Drishyam 3 ensemble generates initial curiosity, the writing team must revamp its punchlines and abandon decades-old comedy templates if the season hopes to remain relevant on a global streaming service like Netflix!
