It seemed like a story destined for Hollywood glory, but when TOP GUN MAVERICK was released in 2020, it was met with a lukewarm reception. Critics and audiences all agreed on one thing; this film needed to go down in flames. Thankfully for all of us that weren’t so lucky as to live in 2020 America, the rest of the world said no to Tom Cruise’s latest disaster.
TOP GUN MAVERICK brought in a total of 7.8 billion dollars at the box office, setting a new best for 2022’s highest-grossing film. A movie that was met with a lukewarm reception from critics and audiences alike, this is still an impressive tally for a film that was met with so much hatred from everyone.

“He’s got you, baby. Your shaky hands that just can’t hold on, your eyes dazed from too much flying”. These are the opening lyrics to the Top Gun song “You’ve Got My Number” and the plot of this movie is about fighter pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) who has an outing with his F-14 Tomcat when he intercepts a Soviet MiG-25.
The MiG pilot is called Maverick and due to some mistakes made by Pete damages a wing of his aircraft. Pete’s friend and fellow pilot Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) is critically injured when his aircraft exploded because of damage made by the MiG-25. Maverick is interrogated by the Navy, he escapes from his imprisonment and accepts to fly again with the condition that Cruise will be his new partner. The pilot of Goose is changed for another one, Kenny “Jester” Mitchell (Val Kilmer) who is Pete and Maverick’s friend.
Top Gun: Maverick reveals Hollywood’s vulnerability in China
When Tom Cruise and the makers of the movie Top Gun released the film to theaters back in 1986, they never foresaw just how big of a phenomenon it would ultimately become. Now, over 30 years later, the film is not only a cult classic but also one of America’s most popular films according to IMDB. It is known as much for its soundtrack as it is for its 80s aesthetic with neon lights and questionable fashion choices.
Along with the film’s soundtrack, there have been several merchandise releases over the years. One of which is a set of military dog tags that came in 2 versions, one beige and one black. According to IMDB, the tags stay true to the design of the dog tags seen in Top Gun. The tags feature Tom Cruise’s character Maverick holding his rank as a lieutenant commander and have ‘Top Gun’ written across them in cursive font.
