A battery-management software fault has triggered the recall of roughly 142,000 electric vehicles, after the manufacturer determined that a diagnostic routine could fail to detect a specific pattern of cell degradation before it becomes a thermal risk.

No injuries have been attributed to the defect. The recall report filed with the safety regulator describes a small number of thermal events, all in vehicles that had been repeatedly fast-charged to a high state of charge and left at that level for extended periods.

What the fault is

Modern packs monitor each cell group for voltage and temperature and compare the readings against a model of expected behaviour. The fault lies in that comparison: under a narrow set of conditions the routine treated a genuinely anomalous reading as sensor noise and suppressed the warning it should have raised.

The remedy is a software update that changes both the detection thresholds and the vehicle’s response, adding a conservative charge limit when the routine sees a pattern it cannot classify. Most affected vehicles will receive the update over the air; a minority require a service visit because of an older communications module.
