Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna reunite onscreen after seven years. Unlike their previous collaborations, Ranabaali is a period drama that explores alternate history. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the film is set during the British era and explores how the southern part of India was affected by famine. Vijay had promised a full-fledged comeback with this film. So, here are my thoughts on the first half of the film.
The film is divided into multiple chapters, with the first one introducing us to Vijay Deverakonda’s ferocious titular character. He is living up to his rowdy tag in the film as he shows no mercy. The actor flaunts his ripped body and immaculate horse-riding skills. His introductory scenes portray him as a ruthless man who shows no mercy, not even to those who share their sob stories. He is also seen dancing with a severed head.
Vijay-Rashmika Chemistry
The best part of the film is the chemistry between Ranabaali and Jayamma. Ranabaali’s ferocious nature is evident in his marriage as well, when he tries to force his wife to get physical with him. However, Jayamma tries to make him understand the importance of getting to know each other before he pounces on her like an animal.

The British Angle
One chapter introduces us to the British regime and its brutalities. Ranabaali has yet to be directly impacted by it, but we know he will soon become an obstacle to their rule. The film is filled with brutal violence, barring the sequence exploring Ranabaali’s marriage. This experience opens his eyes to the much harsher realities of life during the British era, setting the stage for the rest of the story.
So far, Ranabaali has been impressive in its storytelling, intentions, and execution!
