Scheduled for a theatrical release on October 9, The Social Reckoning features Aaron Sorkin stepping into the director’s chair after previously writing The Social Network. As this upcoming picture revisits the universe of Facebook, Sorkin has clarified why David Fincher—who helmed the 2010 film—did not return to direct.
Sorkin shared that he initially wanted Fincher to direct The Social Reckoning, but an exclusive agreement between Fincher and Netflix created an obstacle. Additionally, Sorkin had a timeline in mind that required the movie to hit screens sooner rather than later.
Why David Fincher Didn’t Direct The Social Reckoning
During a recent discussion, Sorkin remarked, “I was my second choice to direct it. I wanted David to direct it, but [he] couldn’t.” He explained that Fincher’s exclusive Netflix contract prevented him from taking the job. “Even if he could have somehow gotten Netflix’s permission to go work at Sony, I didn’t want The Social Reckoning to come out a year after the midterm elections. I didn’t think we were going to be in the mood anymore. I wanted it to come out now,” he stated, adding that he sent the finished script directly to Fincher upon completion.

Sorkin went on to say, “Fincher was the first person to read the script. He’s been a very enthusiastic support person, and he was talking about how it’s not going to be hard to do this movie, and the only person really who could bend us over a table is Jesse, and we just all assumed Jesse was going [to play Zuckerberg again].”
What Is The Social Reckoning About?
Drawing from the events that inspired the Wall Street Journal‘s 2021 investigative report, ‘The Facebook Files,’ the movie recounts the true narrative of Frances Haugen (portrayed by Mikey Madison). She is a young engineer at Facebook who partners with Wall Street Journal journalist Jeff Horwitz (played by Jeremy Allen White) to embark on a perilous path that ultimately exposes the tech company’s heavily guarded secrets.
Directed by Aaron Sorkin, The Social Reckoning is set to premiere on October 9.
