Anna Jarvis stated this in the year 1908 and she took the initiative for making this event as an official holiday. She held a memorial, at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, for her mother. She started this campaign in the year 1905 after when her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis died. Anna Jarvis was a peace worker and she helped and treated wounded soldiers during the American Civil War. She created Mother’s Day Work Club to deal with public health issues. Anna Proposed to the United States Congress for making Mother’s Day a national holiday. Her request was rejected after being mocked. After too many efforts, by 1911, some states of the United States observed this day as some local holiday (in states of West Virginia). In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation for making Mother’s day a national holiday. All over the world this day was observed for honoring the mothers.
After being succeeded in her ambition, Anna got some resentment. She found that holiday was being commercialized. This was because Hallmark Cards and other Companies started to make greeting cards for mother’s day. She thought it was violating the idea of mother’s day. It seemed to her that profits were made in the name of sentiment. She thought that cards are useless, one should write a letter to show love and gratitude towards the mother. Boycotted it and went against the law. She threatened the companies involved to issue a lawsuit. Jarvis protested at a candy makers’ Convention, at a meeting of American War Mothers. She was arrested for violating the law but afterwards she apologized for her mistake and she explained that she didn’t have any ill-intention.
